Two-state chase leads to prison

A South Bend man who led police on a high-speed chase back and forth across the Michigan-Indiana state line in March was sent to prison for 18 to 60 months in Berrien County Trial Court Monday.

Timothy John Evans, 35, of 2227 Portage Ave., South Bend, “had no regard for anyone” while racing at high speeds through residential areas in both states, including Wayne, Cass and 11th, 12th and 13th streets in Niles.

Wiley ordered Evans, self-employed rehabilitating distressed houses, to pay $1,698, including a $500 fine.

“Your behavior goes beyond egregious,” the judge said. “You placed numerous people in danger unnecessarily,” running stop signs and red lights and trying to sideswipe a state police trooper before bailing out of the vehicle and fleeing on foot.

“It was an absolute miracle no one was killed. I can’t overlook that.”
