Haas ready to start building

Dowagiac Planning Commission gave conditional approval Monday night to a site plan submitted by Barr Design Group of Goshen, Ind., for Haas Sytems’ 3,520-square-foot, wood-frame office/warehouse.

Haas Systems, founded in 1980 on Fosdick Street in Wayne Township, is building a new facility in the industrial park and moving 11 employees into Dowagiac.

City Council April 8 approved the sale of 4.84 acres at 57140 Woodhouse Drive to A&E Properties, LLC, of which Eric Haas is a managing member, for $6,050.

“He’s already got grade work started out there,” city Building Official James Bradford said. “In the next couple of weeks, when I get construction plans, I think they’re going to start building. He’s chomping at the bit to get that building up and going. I believe Moore Brothers is doing the building.”

Haas, founded by Robert and Katherine Haas as an entrepreneurial sideline to other fulltime jobs, provides security systems, phone and communication systems and alarm monitoring services for residential and commercial clients.

The company tripled in size the five years preceding 1995 and again in 2001.

Haas serves customers primarily within a 35-mile radius but ventures as far east as Detroit and as far south as Fort Wayne, Ind.

Besides being a Panasonic representative, Haas is affiliated with a Niles contractor who does hardware for Amtrak while it concentrates on cabling.

Planners heard no public comment at the June 3 hearing.

No landscaping was noted on the site plan.

The zoning ordinance requires at least one tree for every 20 linear feet of street frontage or a shrub at least 24 inches tall for every 10 feet.

Vice Chairman Dave Daniels conducted the meeting in the absence of Chairman Robert Frontczak.
