DOWAGIAC —There was a time when Dowagiac senior Greta Whitaker would have been signing to play softball at a college of her choice.

However, that was before she discovered that golf had become her favorite high school sport.

In just a short period of time, Whitaker fine tuned her game and ended up qualifying as a individual for the Division 3 state finals last fall.

Whitaker tied for fourth at the state meet, the first Dowagiac female golfer to both qualify for, and place at the state tournament.

As a result, Whitaker signed with Bethel University in Mishawaka, Indiana to continue her academic and athletic career. She will play golf for
the Pilots.

“When I took my visit there, it just felt better than any other visit I had,” Whitaker said. “I felt like I was at home.”

She also looked at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Ferris State University.”

She is currently undecided about a major.

Whitaker said she is upset about possibly not getting to play her final season of softball. She was able to wrap up her girls basketball career before the COVID-19 outbreak suspended sports indefinitely.

“It is very upsetting,” she said. “Softball used to be my No. 1 sport, and then I started playing golf. But this being my final year of softball ever, and I might not get to play it, it is very hard.”

Without a sister at home anymore, she has not had anyone to play catch or hit with.
