BUCHANAN — Defending Lakeland Conference golf champion Dowagiac took another step toward defending its title by winning the league jamboree hosted by Buchanan at Orchard Hills Country Club Monday.

The Chieftains, led by medalists Travis Rehborg and Dane Spagnoli, shot 186 to easily defeat runner-up Buchanan, which shot 216.

Brandywine finished third with a 229 and Berrien Springs fourth with a 233. Benton Harbor did not have enough golfers to post a team score.

Rehborg and Spagnoli tied for medalist honors as they both shot 42 on the front nine at Orchard Hills.

Dowagiac also got a 48 from Luke Spagnoli and a 54 from Ashton Scherer.

“We are starting to play a little more consistent, our top three players Dane, Luke and Travis (in alphabetical order) keep rotating or sharing the medalist honors,” Dowagiac Coach Bob Turner said. “So, if we can get all three having a good night at the same time we will be where we want for the stretch run at the end of the year. We keep working on body language and mental toughness. Those will be key for us.”

Buchanan was led by Jacob Kuntz’s 52. Xander Curtis shot 51 to lead the Bobcats.
