KALAMAZOO — The Niles soccer team was blanked by host Loy Norrix in the second round of the SMAC Tournament Tuesday.

The Vikings allowed all four goals in the opening half.

“We came out a little sluggish, giving up four goals to the Knights,” said Niles coach Abel Fonseca. “We gave up a penalty kick and a few ‘gimmie’ goals to them, all in the first 20 minutes of the first half. Drew Gourlay had some really good saves in there to help keep the score 4-0 until we settled down. We started being more aggressive to win the ball back. That gave us opportunities to score in the first half.”

Fonseca said the effort was much better in the final 40 minutes.

“The second half, we came out picking up the intensity,” Fonseca said. “Had plenty of shots and possessing the ball on the attacking half. We seemed to find our team chemistry.”

Gourlay finished the match with 12 saves.
