Niles dominates Brandywine Quad

The Brandywine Bobcats got their track season off and running by hosting a quad meet on Wednesday afternoon, but it was the cross-town rival Niles Vikings that stole the show.

The Buchanan Bucks and the Mishawaka Marian Knights were the other two schools in action at Brandywine High School.

In boys action, Niles nearly doubled up the home team as the Vikings won eight of the 16 events on its way to the victory. Niles placed first with 120.5 points, followed by Brandywine’s 63. Marian scored 45.5 while Buchanan finished with 11.

The Bobcats did manage to score four first-place finishes on the day as Jacob Frazier took home honors in the shot put with a toss of 48- 1.5. He was followed by teammate Stone Hadley at 45-6.5 and a trio of Vikings led by Rodney Applewhite’s toss of 43-0.5.

Jake Wieger scored a victory for the ‘Cats in the pole vault with a vault of 9- 6. A pair of Vikings, Cody Stick and Alex Hunt rounded out the top three as they managed to clear the 8- 6 mark but couldn’t get any further.

The other Bobcat victories came in the 4×800 and 4×200 relays.

For Niles, they dominated both the 4×100 (47.41 seconds) and 4×400 (3:37) relays. Also claiming victories for the Vikings were Brandon Partee in both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles in times of 15.55 and 41.59 respectively. Ronnie Jones took home the 100-meter dash title in 11.64 seconds, while Anthony Gonzales won the 800-meters in 2:12.22.

In field events two more Vikings out distanced themselves from the competition as Jordan Potthoff won the discus with a throw of 137-6.75 better the field by ten feet.

Miles Busby easily won the high jump as he cleared 6-5 and the next closest was only able to jump 5-8.

In girls action, once again the Vikings dominated as Niles captured nine of the sixteen events as they would win easily with 127 points followed by Marian with 62, Buchanan 24, and Brandywine 7.

The Lady Vikings swept the relays claiming each of the four team races.

Also claiming victories for the Vikings on the track were Lashonda Green in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 50.20 while teammate Abby Smith placed third in 54.16.

The 400-meter run was all Vikings as Niles claimed the first five places led by Gabby Snyder with a time of 1:01.65, Karon Nichols 1:04.80, and Paige Chaffin at 1:06.41.

In the field events, the Lady Vikings claimed first and second in the long jump as Ashley Love cleared 15-6, and Green cleared 14-00.50. Niles also placed first and second in the discuss throw as Rebecca Kennedy threw 90-07, while her teammate Karissa Loveall claimed second with a throw of 73-08.

Rounding out the first place finishes for the Vikings was Miranda Baker taking the high jump as she cleared 4-10, while Whitney Ellis took second with a jump of 4-8.
