ALLEGAN – Miranda East pitched a no-hitter in the nightcap against Allegan on Friday night to help Dowagiac to a sweep of the Tigers.

East struck out four in improving her record to 11-5.

Dowagiac’s winning streak improved to 16 games as the Chieftains are now 21-10 heading into the postseason.

Dowagiac won the first game 13-3 in six innings and then took the second game 10-0 in just five innings.

The Chieftains had 12 hits in both contests.

“We did what we had to do tonight to beat a team we should beat,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “We ran the bases well and took advantage of their mistakes. And a no-hitter from Miranda wasn’t too bad either.”

Katie Lorenz went 3-for-5 with a triple and an RBI in the opening game for the Chieftains.

Dowagiac also got two hits from both Devon Ownby and Torie Lowe. The two combined to score six of the team’s runs.

Kristyn Turner, Kiele Belew and East all had doubles.

In the second game, Tara Sova moved to 11-5 on the year with a four-hitter. She struck out four.

Ownby was 3-for-3 with a double and a triple, while Lorenz added three more hits to her statistics and is now 12-for-16 in her last four games.

Sierra Herter finished with two hits.

“We had played some solid softball here the last few weeks,” Behnke said. “We have played good defense, got good pitching and hit the ball well and our record shows that. All that doesn’t mean much if we don’t work hard now the next couple of practices and prepare for our pre-district game against Lakeshore.”
