Niles Army veteran Herb Ochenryder was impressed with Tuesday’s Veteran’s Ceremony lunch at Southside Learning Center in Niles.

More than 30 veterans were honored with a staff/student-made lunch and numerous presentations.

“They do a fabulous job here,” Ochenryder said. “It is just terrific.”

Southside’s Veteran’s Ceremony is in its fifth year. Each class made a banner dedicated to a specific war in which the United States participated. The students also wrote poems and made cards for each veteran.

“This is probably the biggest event of the year for us,” said Southside Principal Diane Curry. “Our students take a lot of pride in what they do.”

The event opened with members of Rolling Thunder Chapter No. 2 Indiana performing a flag-folding ceremony.

Select students then read prepared statements to the veterans. Afterward, veterans introduced themselves to the students.
