Cass board looking at options with Red Brick School

The Cassopolis Board of Education is taking a look at what to do with the Red Brick School building.

The building, which according to Cassopolis Superintendent Tracy Hertsel, was built in the 1960s is something the district is trying to figure out its future.

“We were in the early stages of fact finding,” Hertsel said Tuesday. “They (the board) wanted to see some numbers on what it could cost to demolish the building. It was built in like the 1960s, so if someone were to buy it, they would have to put a lot of money into it just to bring it up to code.”

Hertsel said in the end that demolishing the building and then selling the land may be the best choice for the school district.

“There is a lot of good farm land there,” he said. “It is adjacent to our ag farm. Over the next few months the board will try and make a decision what to do with it.”
