NILES — John “Jack” Russell Guipe, 91, of Milton Township., Niles area, passed to his rest on June 11, 2013 while a patient at Woodland Terrace of Niles, after an illness.

Jack was born Aug. 8, 1921 in Elkhart, the son of Wallace Raymond and Agnes Bertha (Garbrick) Guipe. He has lived in the Michiana area all of his life.

Jack joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at an early age and worked in the Angola, Ind. area for the government. His life work was in foundry, having worked at Bendix, then Studebaker and lastly at Wheelabrator-Frye, where he retired after 25 years of service. He served in the United States Army, entering in 1942 and stayed for the duration of WW II, having served in Northern Solomon and the South Philippines when it was liberated. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater ribbon, with two bronze stars.

Jack was married Dec. 31, 1949 in Mishawaka, Ind., to Betty Alice Kindig, who survives with four children, Nancy Jean (John) Reid of Vandalia, Janet (Rev. Richard) Brown of Lynchburg, Va., John (Christine) Middling of Constantine and Richard Raymond (Chris) Guipe of Niles. There are 20 loving grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and four great-great- grandchildren.

Family who have passed are his parents, his sisters, Florence Hunter, Helen Brown and Francis Taylor, and his brother Henry Guipe.

Jack was a very generous and kind man, who enjoyed doing for others and assisting where ever he could help. In his spare time he enjoyed his garden and especially liked camping and loved the time in Michigan camping areas.

Family and friends may gather on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hope United Methodist Church, 69941 Elkhart Rd., Edwardsburg. The Service of Remembrance will be on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Church, where there will be a time of visitation from 10 to 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Richard Brown, son-in-law to Jack. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind. with the United States Army Honor Guard playing TAPS and folding the American Flag.
