Suspect chokes, threatens to kill police officer

CASSOPOLIS — An Edwardsburg man who allegedly strangled a police officer and attacked two emergency personnel was arraigned Wednesday in Cass County District Court.

Matthew Ryan Brown, 24, is accused of brutally attacking Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police officer Kevin English as he responded to safety check at Brown’s residence in the 24000 block of Redfield Road in Edwardsburg in the early morning hours Tuesday.

Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz said Brown knocked English off a porch and into some bushes where Brown began strangling the officer.

Brown allegedly told the officer he was going to kill him, according to witnesses.

Fitz said the officer indicated he was faint and almost lost consciousness before emergency service workers came to his aid. Brown is also accused of attacking those workers.

Fitz said the English sustained injuries to his neck and face, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Brown was arraigned on felony charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and resisting and obstruction a police officer. He was also arraigned on two misdemeanor counts of aggravated assault.

He is being held at the Cass County Jail on $100,000 bond.

A pre-exam hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday.
