Welding training resumes

The Welding Technology Education Center (WTEC) in Marcellus has resumed its welding training program.
WTEC, housed in the Fab Masters Company (FMC) facility, resumed training on Feb. 13. This class will graduate on April 5 with their American Welding Society certification and be ready to join the workforce.
Realizing the need for and shortage of skilled welders, Ron Troxell, president of FMC, launched WTEC Inc.  in the spring of 2009.  WTEC Inc. is primarily working with Michigan Works and WorkOne to retrain displaced and unemployed workers. Due to expired government funding last June, classes ceased. Now, with the renewal of funding to training programs, WTEC classes have resumed.
WTEC is not your typical welding school — it is unique in its training concept for two reasons.
First, the training is held in an industrial environment (in the welding shop of Fab Masters Co.) on industrial equipment, so students experience the day-to-day workings of a production welding shop first-hand.
Secondly, and most important, classes are small, and hands-on so students get individual attention. The WTEC certification rate is 99 percent. Training is completed with American Welding Society certification in MIG and TIG for aluminum in eight weeks, as opposed to months in a traditional college setting.
