Local brings voice back to Dowagiac

Anna Biek is making more of a mark on music singing standards than she did as a Dowagiac student.

Biek, who has moved home from Virginia, entertained Thursday and Friday evenings at Summer in the City.

Biek fell behind playing clarinet when the Catholic school closed, “I got kicked out of choir” and she sang with Free Expressions.

Some 1973 Union High classmates turned out to hear Jack and Betty Biek’s daughter, such as Debbie Donker Cuthbert and Patricia Bahus Ruhl.

“I was very shy about singing” in those days, said Biek, who has been singing at Wood Fire.

“I lived in Virginia longer than I lived here,” she said after a set that included some scat singing, some Patsy Cline country (“Crazy” and “I Fall to Pieces”), timeless tunes like “The Lady is a Tramp,” Frank Sinatra’s “Young at Heart” and “Nice and Easy,” Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable,” “Home” by Michael Buble and to close, the Carpenters’ “Bless the Beasts and the Children.”

“I love the traffic,” she said. “Out there, the traffic’s horrible. I worked for Colonial Williamsburg and have a little place on the bluff overlooking the river which opens into Chesapeake Bay. I never got married. I studied culinary arts to be a pastry chef,” but “made my living for eight years as an entertainer” before returning to it a few years ago. “I had a lot of fun these last two nights.”
