Fifth Street in Niles closed for sewer repair

North Fifth Street in Niles will be closed to through traffic from near the Amtrak Station to Pucker Street while crews work to repair a sanitary sewer line.

Gary Soper, superintendent of Niles Public Works, said he hopes the work will be finished in a couple days.

“We can’t be sure, but that’s what we are hoping for,” he said.

The sanitary sewer is in Fifth Street. Soper said repairs are being done near Fifth and Pokagon.

“The sanitary sewer we’ve tried to clean has some obstructions in it,” Soper said. “We haven’t been able to clear those obstructions so we’re resorting to these repairs.”

Those traveling south on M-51 toward Niles should detour west on Pucker Street to Ullery Road and then travel south on M-140 to M-139, which runs through Niles.

Those coming from Niles should take Main Street and turn north of M-139.

Selge Construction, of Niles, is doing the work at the City of Niles’ direction.
