Pokagon School reunion Sept. 14

The annual reunion takes place at Pokagon United Methodist Church between Dowagiac and Niles.

Pokagon School’s fifth annual reunion takes place Sept. 14, with sign-in at 11 a.m. and lunch at 1 p.m.

The event is open to former students and Pokagon residents.

The reunion takes place at Pokagon United Methodist Church, corner of Kansas and East streets, midway between Dowagiac and Niles.

“We had a Dowagiac address and lived in Cass County,” but when the school closed in 1966 after she attended kindergarten, Dawn Skalla of Lawrence progressed educationally through Sumnerville for first and second grade, Howard for third through fifth grades and Ballard in the Niles school system.

Please bring a dish to pass and a non-alcoholic beverage.

New this year will be door prizes and a suggestion box for ideas for upcoming reunions.

Pokagon School sat near M-51 from the early 1900s until 1954, when it burned and a three-room building replaced it.

It wasn’t a one-room school, but two levels, with up to fourth grade below and the upper grades above.
