A retired cardiologist from the Niles area was sentenced to 180 days in jail and five years probation after admitting to drugging a woman and having sex with her when she was unconscious.

Paul Randal Miluk, 55, of Buchanan Township, received the sentence from Judge Dennis Wiley Monday morning in Berrien County Court in Niles.

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) also announced last week it had suspended Miluk’s license to practice osteopathic medicine surgery in Michigan.

Miluk pleaded guilty in June to three felony charges: delivery of a controlled substance to commit criminal sexual conduct, fourth degree criminal sexual conduct and false report of a felony.

Miluk admitted to drugging a woman without her knowledge more than one time at his home. When the woman had passed out, he would engage in sexual acts with her.

“Your behavior is, to say the least, bizarre,” Wiley said.

When Miluk learned police were investigating him, he staged a home invasion and reported it to police in May. He later admitted it was a false report. The only items missing after the fake break-in were Miluk’s iPad and iPhone. They are still missing.

Prosecutor Kelly Travis said it is possible those devices contained evidence of a crime and Miluk purposefully got rid of them.

The court heard he is currently retired after working many years as a cardiologist in the area. Miluk also dedicated several years to helping area veterans.

“All of these good things you have done for others in your life are commendable… but, unfortunately, all of the good you’ve done has come to a screeching halt,” Wiley said.

Miluk must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. He was ordered to have no contact with the victim and was banned from using social media websites.
