OTSEGO — The Dowagiac wrestling team split a pair of Wolverine Conference matches at Otsego High School Wednesday.

The Chieftains edged South Haven 40-36 when Leo Edwards pinned Michael Williams in 3:06 of their 119-pound match.

Dowagiac lost to state powerhouse Allegan 78-3 in the second round.

“We wrestled well,” Dowagiac coach Matt Alward said. “We were down two points when Leo Edwards got a pin. That was a big match for us, but the real turning point was when Matt Lyle beat Anthony Duncan 6-5. Duncan is a kid who has over 100 wins. I knew we had a shot if Matt could win.”

Also picking up wins against the Rams were Mason Hiler (130), Aubrey Huston (140), Caleb Sands (152), Tom Smith (160), Jacob Davis (189) and Tristan Howard (285).

Lyle was the lone winner against the Tigers.

“We had poor match-ups all the way across the board against Allegan,” Alward said. “We are just not ready for that type of competition yet.”
