Let’s make graduation season safe

All our high schools have held their commencement exercises and graduation celebration season is now in full swing.

We would like to congratulate all our graduates and wish them luck. Some will go on to four-year colleges and universities, while others will begin their careers at a junior college.

Some will go to trade schools or enlist in the military and some will dive right into the workforce.

No matter what path they have chosen for themselves, we hope they will achieve great things.

We would also ask they that exercise great caution as they celebrate their achievements over the next several weeks.

Here are a few safety tips:

• Adequate supervision is important. Whether the graduate likes it or not, you have to consider everyone’s overall safety.

• Parents should get involved. Experts say, the single greatest deterrent to any teenager’s inappropriate behavior is the involvement of their parent. Show interest in what your child is doing, where they are doing it, and who they are doing it with.

• If at all possible, offer to throw your child’s graduation party.

• Say no to alcohol, smoking and drugs.

• Don’t drink and drive, and don’t get in a car with anyone who has been drinking.

• Call a parent, guardian, or someone you trust in case plans change or you need help.
