Three females were injured in what was described as a “high-speed, heavy impact” crash at the 32700 block of U.S. Highway 12 East, Milton Township, Tuesday afternoon.

According to Lt. Doug Myers of the Niles Township Fire Department, the two-vehicle accident was reported at 4:52 p.m. When the fire department arrived, one car was engulfed in flames and sitting in the middle of U.S. 12. The other vehicle, an SUV, was sitting on the north side of the highway facing south.

A neighboring resident saw the accident and started to extinguish the car fire, Myers said.

Firefighters cut two doors off the car. The driver sustained severe injuries and was transported to a MedFlight helicopter from Memorial Hospital, South Bend, waiting in a field on the south side of the road.

Two females in the SUV, including one minor, also sustained injuries.

The cause of the accident was undetermined at press time. Officers were taking witness testimony at the scene.

Both vehicles were totaled.

Traffic was redirected off U.S. 12 on the east and west sides of the accident.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department, Edwardsburg Police Department, Edwardsburg Ambulance, Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service and Michigan State Police Niles Post also responded to the scene.
