Hartman goes back-to-back, breaks state record

COMSTOCK PARK — Not only did Brandywine’s Evan Hartman successfully defend his Division 3 state discus championship at Comstock Park Saturday, he crushed the old state record in the process.

Hartman, who went out for track for the first time last year, broke his own Brandywine school record and the state mark with a toss of 187-1. The old record was set twice — by Davis Scouten of Brooklyn Columbia Central in 2011 and by Zack Hill of Allendale in 2009. The old standard was 181-0.

Winning the title wasn’t easy for Hartman, who had only thrown 169 up until his final effort which was almost a foot behind the current leader.

“I knew the nerves were getting to him,” Brandywine coach Terry Borr said. “Trying to win back-to-back state championships in anything is tough. Before his final throw, he went over and talked to his dad and calmed down a little bit and then just made a great throw on the last throw of his high school career.”

The Bobcats tied for seventh place overall with 19 points. Wyoming Kelloggsville won the team championship with 52 points. Mason County Central was second with 31.

Also placing for Brandywine were Nathan Anders in the 110-meter high hurdles and Courtlan Gordon in the 200 meters.

The pair then combined forces with Andrew Duckett and Michael Shelton to place in the 1,600-meter relay.

Anderson was sixth in the hurdles with a time of 15.44, while Gordon was sixth in the 200 with a time of 23.13. The relay team was also sixth as it posted a time of 3:29.28.

I was really proud of the kids and their performances,” Borr said. “It capped off a great season for Brandywine boys track. The seniors did a fantastic job of leading our program this year.”
