Local business donates smoke detectors to Cass and St. Joseph counties

One local business is doing its part to prevent catastrophes from house fires.

“A couple of years ago, one of the owners of SERVPRO came across a fire in which a child was unable to get out because the family did not have a smoke detector, and he did not survive,” said Steve Meyer, operations manager at SERVPRO, and coordinator of the smoke detector project. “We want to do whatever we can to make sure things like that don’t happen.”

SERVPRO’s solution to this problem is a donation of 1,000 smoke detectors, totaling more than $3,000.

On Wednesday, Oct. 2, SERVPRO will do a live radio remote at the Three Rivers Fire Department with 95.9 WLKM-FM from 3-5 p.m. Representatives will talk about fire safety and tell citizens of Cass and St. Joseph counties to go to their local fire department to pick up a free smoke detector.

In Cass County, SERVPRO donated smoke detectors to the Dowagiac Fire Department, located 103 Park Place in Dowagiac, and Cassopolis Fire Department, located 139 N. Broadway Street in Cassopolis.

“It is Fire Prevention Awareness Month and we are doing our part to make sure everyone has smoke detectors. It is proven that smoke detectors save lives,” said Meyer.

SERVPRO is a water and fire damage cleanup company located in Three Rivers, Mich.
