Log cabin museum open on Dec. 1

CASSOPOLIS — “Cass County Pioneer Log Cabin Museum” offers a new name and a new look for the 1923 cabin on the hill overlooking the east side of Stone Lake.

Eighty-nine years ago, pioneers from all over the county each donated a log from their property to build this cabin that would tell future generations how they lived.

Each log was numbered — some 144 timbers.

Recorded in a book were the family name, town, type of tree the log came from and, in some cases, length of the log.

Families also donated articles found in their homes and later generations gave in memory of ancestors.

The log cabin was dedicated on Pioneer Day, June 20, 1923.

A list of contributors can be found in the Dowagiac and Edwardsburg libraries, as well as the Cass Historical Library.

If you are an ancestor or think you may be related, call Marcia Gaskin in Cassopolis at (269) 445-3759.

The museum will be open from 3 to 6 p.m. the first Saturday in December to join in the Village of Cassopolis Christmas celebration.

The museum’s normal schedule is Memorial Day through Labor Day, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4:30 p.m.
