Cass County’s household hazardous waste collection will be May 19, rain or shine, under the grandstand at the fairgrounds in Cassopolis.
Disposal will be free for the first 300 pounds, as will electronic waste collection.
Old flags and used eyeglasses may also be disposed.
Flags will be disposed of properly with a VFW ceremony.
Eyeglasses collected go to the Lions Club.
No appointment needed for the event from 9 a.m. to noon. First come, first served.
The fairground is located at 590 O’Keefe Street.
There will be no charge for televisions or computer monitors.
Electronic waste consists of any item operated with a battery or plugged into an outlet.
Items that will not be accepted include latex paint (not hazardous; may be disposed of with ordinary refuse by opening can and letting paint dry); major appliances, used motor oil, bio-hazards, air conditioners, fire extinguishers, propane tanks (20# or larger), dehumidifiers, ammunition, car batteries and fireworks).
After 300 pounds, the charge is $1.50 a pound.
Tires may be disposed of for: car/pickup truck, $2 without rims, $4 with rims; semi truck/trailer, $6/$8; and tractor, $20/$25.
Examples of acceptable household hazardous waste include: from your home, aerosols, bug spray and carpet cleaner; from your garage, antifreeze, brake fluid and degreasers; from your workshop, creosote, oil-based paints and varnishes; and miscellaneous, dry cleaning solvent, hot tub chemicals, mercury, swimming pool chorline and photographic chemicals.
