BERRIEN SPRINGS — As sisters, Grace and Sophia Bachman share a lot of things, from their love of animals to the chores on the family farm in Buchanan.

Now the two can share the title of grand champion.

On Monday, Grace’s goat was named grand champion boer market in the Berrien County Youth Fair’s goat show.

Her younger sister, Sophia, 8, claimed the same title in 2014.

“It is really neat,” said Grace of keeping the award in the family. “It’s the first time that has happened for us.”

Grace will enter the sixth grade at Buchanan Middle School in the fall.

In her five years at the fair, Grace has also shown grand champion rabbits (pen of two in 2014) and pygmy goats (2013 and 2014).

Grace said she was surprised her boer market goat won because she thought her sister’s animal was the better of the two.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Grace, adding that she owes a big “thank you” to Maddie Yuhas, a Cassopolis girl who has helped teach she and her sister some of the finer points of showing livestock. “She’s helped a lot.”

Yuhas has earned several showmanship titles and shown several grand champion animals at the Cass County Fair.

Niles’ Andrew McKee also had a good showing at Monday’s goat show. He had the reserve grand champion dairy market goat.

“It was exciting,” said McKee, who will be a second grader at Brandywine’s Merritt Elementary School this fall. “That was my first time (showing a reserve grand champion goat).”
