Summer in the City set to sizzle

BMX demos, the Flying Houndz Frisbee dog show, circus-style performers, Budweiser Bags Championship, carnival rides and games, along with the new Beer Garden, hosted by The Wounded Minnow Saloon, aim to make Dowagiac’s 28th annual Dowagiac Summer in the City Festival sizzlin’.

The three-day festival, running July 25-27, includes musical entertainment from rock, rhythm and blues to country, folk and today’s favorite covers.

Music will be provided by Wildfire, guitarist and singer Mike Struwin, Kalamazoo Avenue, Sucker Punch, the one-man band of Al Mott, The Crane Wives, Rebel Pride, Exit 41 and Jordi.

Dance performances will be presented by Ballett Folklorico Sol Azteca Mexican dancers, Miss Michele and Co., MKSOD, Positively Dance and Encore Dance Co.

Dowagiac’s largest and oldest summertime gala is funded, in part, by St. Denys Foundation.

For the 12th consecutive year, the foundation provided a $10,000 grant to the Dowagiac Downtown Development Authority to help fund entertainment and related costs of the event.

Coupled with this significant grant, The Pokagon Fund provided $5,000 in funding, with corporate sponsors providing another $3,300.

The announcement was made by Vickie Phillipson, program director for the Greater Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce and DDA, who handles grant writing and raises the monies needed to fund presentation of vocal, instrumental and specialty entertainment. She also oversees advertising and advance publicity for the event.

Corporate donors include Baymont Inn and Suites, Bethel College at SMC, Creative Vinyl Signs, Family Fare, Forest Glen Assisted Living, Leader Publications, Dr. Alan Montgomery, Southwestern Michigan College, The Canopeum and Who Knew? Consignment.

To receive a festival schedule of events or to reserve commercial sidewalk booth space, call the Chamber at (269) 782-8212 or visit www.DowagiacChamber.com.
