George Avery

George was born in Mendota, Illinois, to Paul and Jolene Avery June 29, 1959. He graduated from Decatur Public schools in 1978. He retired from Contech, in Dowagiac, after 20 years of service. He went on to be a Corrections officer after moving to Arizona in 2001. He was employed by Arizona Department of corrections at the Maricopa County Women’s Prison for 16 years, he was promoted to plumber and and later physical plant supervisor. He received numerous awards and recognition for his devotion and outstanding work ethic.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved being outdoors, enjoyed camping and riding quads with his wife and friends.

He had many passions in life, including collecting guns, knives, John Deere tractors, and cast iron. He has resurfaced numerous cast iron pans, which he used to cook everything. He often spent hours wandering antique shops to widen his collections.

In his down time, he spent time with his family, friends, and beloved dogs.

George is survived by his wife Karen Avery; daughters: Frankie (Randi) Avery, of Greenwood, Indiana, and Bobbie Hughes (Greg), of Richland, Michigan, Step-son, Michael Butera (Amanda), of Collinsville, Illinois, Step-daughter, Sarah Buffington (Jarod), of Flagstaff, Arizona, Sisters: Paula Huston and Mary Osborn (Charles), Father, Paul Avery, all of Westview, Kentucky. George was preceded in death by his Aunt, Lois Avery; Uncle, Floyd Avery; sister, Kim Tyler; Niece, CJ Tyler; and Mother, Jolene Avery.

The Physical Plant has been a great support for George and his family during the short time from his diagnosis to his passing. His tough guy persona was easily figured out and was loved by so many people, he did not realize this until he was lifted with prayers and so much strength and support.

George has left many hearts empty with his passing.

Memorials may be given to the family for medical expenses or to Banner Hospice, 275 E. Germann Road, Suite 110, Gilbert, Arizona 85297.
