John W. McGill Jr, of Elkhart, Indiana

John W. McGill Jr., of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away after an extended illness on Friday, March 30, 2018, in Elkhart General Hospital.

John was born on Oct. 19, 1946, in Niles, to the late John W. and Eleanor (O’konski) McGill, Sr.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

On Jan. 22, 1977, in South Bend, John married Mary Merrill who survives.

He is survived by his wife Mary, children; Dustin Gill of Grand Rapids, Michael (Jill) Harding of Indianapolis and three grandchildren. He is also survived by his two sisters; Patricia (Robert) Shepard and Betty (Shelby) Holloway both of Niles, his brothers William (Wilma) McGill of Niles and Dennis (Lilly) McGill of Buchanan.

John bravely served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his heroic actions.

John was the owner of John’s Road Service from 1978-2008. He was a respected Diesel Mechanic. He and Mary had also owned Roseland Aquatics. John was a lifelong member of the DAV. He enjoyed photography, gaming and loved animals, especially birds.

Visitation for John will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2018, in Halbritter Wickens Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St., Niles. A funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. in the funeral home. Military Honors will be given at Mission Hills Cemetery where the burial will take place.
