Gaylord Don “Smitty” Smith, 74, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, in Sebring, Florida, where he was a winter resident.

He was born on May 24, 1943, in Lansing, Michigan, to Gaylord C. and Edith (Berg) Smith. Formerly of Perry and recently of Dowagiac, Smitty worked as an electrician with the IBEW in the Lansing area for many years. In addition to his career, he was a farmer, inventor and tinkerer. Taking pride in his ability to problem-solve, he especially relished the opportunity to use his abilities to teach and help others. He is survived by his daughter, Gayle Hughes (Paul) of Spring Creek, Nevada; siblings, Nancy Robinson of Wauconda, Illinois; Irene Estelle of Rapid City, Michigan; Curtis Smith of Williamston, Michigan; companion, Eunice Bell of Dowagiac, many nieces and nephews, and grandchildren, John and Kate Hughes.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Beth Smith and son, Eric Smith.
