John Berry’s earthly life ended on Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, at the age of 70.

John was the fifth child born to the late Porter A. and Earmer Lee (Lauderdale) Berry. On Aug. 14, 1992, John wed his lifelong love, Rita Mae Thompson, at a ceremony in Buchanan.

John was employed by AM General Corp. until his retirement in 2013. He enjoyed riding his customized 10-speed bike and his motorcycle. A craftsman at heart, John designed a special walking device called “The Johnny Cane.” He was also passionate about photography. His photos will provide lasting memories for his family and friends.

John’s faith in God became personal during his last earthly days as he frequently repeated “It’s me and God.”

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Berry; parents, Porter and Earmer Berry; son, Tracy Lee Hill; great-granddaughter Kamiri Bibbs; brothers, C.L. Berry and Porter Berry Jr.; and a sister, Earmer L. Berry-Carter Jr.

John is survived by his son, Shelby (Sheena) Thompson of Paramount, California; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; siblings, Georgia L. Brown of Niles, Vera (Lee) Nicks of Indianapolis, Lillie M. Maxwell of South Bend, Christine Cosey of Niles, James Berry of Niles, Lloyd “Butch” Berry of Niles, and Pearl (Andy) Theus of Granger; bestfriend and cousin, Henry J. “Jimp” Mayo of Buchanan and many extended family members and close friends.

Homegoing services to honor John’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Niles with a time of visitation one hour prior.
