Mary Ann Cummins, 96, of Cassopolis, died peacefully Sunday afternoon, Dec. 17, 2017, in Cass County Medical Care Facility in Cassopolis.

She was born Aug. 29, 1921, in Newville, West Virginia, the second oldest of 14 children born to the late Virgie and Jesse Gillespie. In order to attend high school, she moved with her sister, Lillian, to Sutton, West Virginia to live in a boarding house. She and Lillian attended business college in Charleston, West Virginia.

Mary Ann married William Arthur Brown in 1945, who preceded her in death in 1967. In 1980, she married Hoyt Cummins.

Mary Ann lived in West Virginia, Ohio and California, where she retired from her administrative assistant position. She and Hoyt retired to the Colorado River in Parker, Arizona. Those were the happiest years of her life until Hoyt’s death in 2000. At that time Mary Ann relocated to Cassopolis to be near family.

Mary Ann will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by her only child, Beverly (Michael) Myers of Cassopolis; grandson, Kent (Jami) Myers of Niles and granddaughter, Kari Myers of Melbourne, Florida; great-grandchildren, Kamren Myers, Kylie Myers; four sisters, Lillian Hyer of Huron, Ohio, Betty Villella of Davie, Florida, Nancy Sheldon of North Canton, Ohio, Ann Dorsey of Barberton, Ohio; one brother, Charles Gillespie of Newville, West Virginia; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, William Brown and Hoyt Cummins, four sisters, Freida Gillespie, Helen Dolan, Olive Roland and Virginia Thomas; and four brothers, Tom Gillespie, Jim Gillespie, William Gillespie and Otis Gillespie.

The family will observe a private remembrance of her life.

Mrs. Cummins’ remains will be laid to rest in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Cassopolis, Michigan.

The family prefers contributions in Mary Ann’s memory be made to the Cass County Medical Care Facility, 23770 Hospital St., Cassopolis, Michigan 49031, because of the wonderful and caring people who took care of Mary Ann for the last five years of her life.
