Betty Lou Skopec, 88, of Niles

Betty Lou Skopec, age 88 years of Niles, Michigan died at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana with her daughter and son at her side.

She was born on May 21, 1925 in Niles to Walter C. and Anna Marie (Butz) Quick. She was graduated from Niles High School, and lived in Niles all of her life. She was employed for over thirty years at the former Simplicity Pattern Company plant in Niles.

Betty attended Saint Mary Catholic Church in Niles. She enjoyed studying genealogy, collecting dolls, and stamp collecting. She was a member of the Niles Senior Center and enjoyed group travel throughout the United States. She also enjoyed visiting the Four Winds Casino.

On July 29, 1950 at Saint Mary Catholic Church she married Theodore Skopec with whom she celebrated the fifty-second anniversary of their wedding prior to his death on May 31, 2003. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Neoma Furst and brothers, Walter, Dale, and Gordon Quick.

Surviving family includes her son, Michael Theodore (& Sandra) Skopec of Niles and her daughter, Karen L. (& Kenneth) Nelson of Edwardsburg, Michigan; grandchildren Jason Nelson, Vincent (& Kendelle) Nelson, Justin (& Elizabeth) Skopec, and Kayla Skopec; great-grandchildren Noah, Isabella, Emily, Genevieve, and Jaxon; and several nieces and nephews whom she cherished.

The Catholic Funeral Liturgy for Betty Skopec will be read at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles by The Rev. David Otto of Saint Mary Catholic Church. Interment will be at Mission Hills.

The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Betty was a survivor of breast cancer, and in her memory contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
