BENTON TOWNSHIP — The Lake Michigan College Concert Choir and Voices LMC, directed by Daniel Hendrickson, will present their spring choral concert on the LMC Mendel Center Mainstage at 7:30 p.m. April 19.
Voices LMC will perform a program of love song settings, including John Farmer’s “Fair Phyllis I Saw,” Thomas Morley’s “April Is in my Mistress’ Face” and  Henry Purcell’s “In These Delightful Pleasant Groves.”  Voices LMC will also perform “Flower of Beauty” by John Clements,” “Things That Never Die,” a Charles Dickens text that has been arranged by Lee Dengler, and “Modinha” a jazz arrangement by Antonio Carlos Jobim that has been made popular by New York Voices.
The concert choir will perform “Past Life Melodies” by Australian composer Sarah Hopkins, which features the technique of harmonic-overtone singing. According to Hopkins, harmonic-overtone singing has its roots in Hoomei “throat”-singing and is indigenous to Western Mongolia and the overtone chanting of Tantric Tibetan Buddhism. Its long oral history embraces secular and sacred traditions. The technique allows singing in two voices simultaneously [by one voice].  Hopkin’s setting creates a rich tapestry of texture and timbre while evoking the ethereal and mystical qualities of past and present times.
The concert choir will perform Morten Lauridsen’s harmonically lush setting of Pablo Neruda’s “Soneto de la Noche” (Sonnet of the Night) whose text poignantly addresses life and death.
The choir will also perform “There Is Sweet Music Here,” a suite of four pieces for mixed chorus and oboe. In this performance, the oboe is performed on violin by LMC music student Yuri Kolev of Bulgaria.
The Lake Michigan College Mendel Center Mainstage is located on the Napier Avenue Campus, 2755 East Napier Ave., Benton Harbor.
Tickets for the program cost $7 general admission, $5 for students and senior citizens, $4 each for groups of 20 or more.
