Wanda Josephine Winiarski, 98, of Battle Creek, formerly of Birch Lake, went to be with Jesus peacefully Saturday evening, March 16, 2013, in Calhoun County Medical Care Facility.

Wanda was born Nov. 16, 1914, in Chicago to John and Marie (Szczupiver) Klimek.

She attended St. Camillus Catholic School and later worked to obtain her cosmetology license.

She ran her own beauty salon in Chicago from 1936 to 1946.

She married Peter J. Winiarski on May 23, 1936, in Chicago. They enjoyed 26 years of life together until Peter’s death in 1962.

In addition to her parents and husband, Wanda was preceded in death by one sister, Jean Hunt, and three brothers, William “Bill” Klimek, Matthew “Mac” Klimek and John Klimek.

In 1943, Wanda and Peter purchased Lazy Lodge Resort on Birch Lake in Vandalia,

making it their permanent home in 1947.

While running Lazy Lodge, she opened a burger and ice cream concession on

the property which she ran for several years.

In 1963, Wanda went to work for the Constantine School system as a cook, retiring in 1980.

After retirement, Wanda enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family and friends at her Birch Lake home. She also started a Bible study attended by friends for several years.

Wanda was active in St. Ann Catholic Church in Cassopolis. In 1996, she moved to Battle Creek, where she enjoyed spending time with her family and socializing with friends.

During her time in Battle Creek, she attended St. Phillip Catholic Church, Dexter Lake Church of God and Victory Life Church.

Wanda will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by: her son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Janice Winiarski of Battle Creek; four grandchildren, Anna Winiarski of Battle Creek, Daniel (Lindsay) Winiarski of Jenison, Stephen (Sheena) Winiarski of Franklin, Tenn., and Deborah Winiarski of Nashville, Tenn.; one great grandson, Joseph Winiarski; and many loving family members and friends.

Family and friends will gather from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Connelly Chapel Wagner Family Funerals, 202 N. Broadway St., Cassopolis with a time for sharing

memories at 7p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Ann Catholic Church, Cassopolis, with Father Donald G. Potts officiating.

Mrs. Winiarski will be laid to rest beside her late husband in Prospect Hill

Cemetery, Cassopolis.

The family prefers memorial contributions to St. Ann Catholic Church, 421 N. Broadway St., Cassopolis, MI 49031, or the church or charity of the donor’s choice.
