Edwardsburg's Deb Burton signs with Davenport University as her family and coach Ronda Varnesdeel look on.

GRAND RAPIDS – Coach Ronda Varnesdeel and staff have signed their second recruit for the 2011 season.

Debra Burton, Edwardsburg High School, has signed a national letter of intent to play softball for Davenport University next year.

Burton, a three year varsity starter, earned All-Conference honors the past two years while hitting .361 with a slugging percentage of .629, along with five home runs.
She was also a member of the Great Lakes Lighting travel organization that took 1st place in three 18-U tournaments this past summer.

“With the loss of two catchers this year to graduation, we knew it was important to find a catcher who could step in immediately and contribute. I feel that a catcher is the commander on the field,” states Coach Varnesdeel. “Debra is that type of catcher. Her skills and knowledge of the game are very advanced. With hard work, she has the ability to step in and take the reins behind the plate immediately.”

She is the daughter of Roger and Becky Burton, and is currently undecided on a major at Davenport.
