Kathleen A. Matthews, 66, of Hoyt Street in Niles, died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010 at her home following a brief illness.

She was born Dec. 25. 1944 in South Bend to Frank Walter and Margaret Ann (Peters) Mahar. She attended South Bend Schools and moved to Niles in 1982, where she graduated from Niles Adult Education in 1989.

Kathleen was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Niles. She enjoyed canning, quilting, sewing, cooking, fishing and camping. She was an avid NASCAR fan at the Michigan International Speedway. She especially enjoyed caring for others, and was known by many as “Grandma” and “Aunt Kathy.”

On Feb. 3. 1982 in Lawton, Okla., she married James. E. Matthews, who survives. She is also survived by her children, Annette (Cliff) Tuttle of Niles, Daniel (Meg) Tomkiewicz II of Seattle, Wash., Chris (Peggy) Tomkiewicz of South Bend, Lisa (Billy) Martin of Blacksburg, S.C., Denise (Mike) Daugherty of North Liberty, Ind., Margaret Matthews of Jacksonville, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings, Dixie (Paul) Schauer of Paw Paw, Mich., Wilma Fell of Cache, Okla., Jack “Ed” (Di) Mahar of Berrien Center, Tonja Milligan-Mahar, Joe (Tammy) Mahar and Gary Mahar, all of Azle, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Mahar.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Kathleen A. Matthews will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2010 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in South Bend by the Rev. Daryl Rybicki of the church.

Committal rites will follow at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens in Niles

The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles and will conclude with evening prayers at 7:30 p.m.
