Maxine V. Burrows, 82, of Isaac McCoy Drive in Niles, died at 12:40 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend following an extended illness.

Mrs. Burrows was born July 10, 1928 in South Bend to Delmas Arnold and Georganna (VanSteenberg) Figg. She graduated from Wilson High School in South Bend with the Class of 1946 and lived in this area all her life.

Maxine was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Niles and was active in church projects. She enjoyed knitting and made more than 250 sweaters for orphanages in foreign countries. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Niles. She was famous for her baked beans.

On June 6, 1948 in Niles, she married James H. Burrows, Sr., who survives.

Mrs. Burrows is also survived by their son, James H. (Karen) Burrows, Jr. of Niles; daughters, Joy (Kenneth) Mapel of South Bend and Kimberly (Richard) Word of Milan, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth (Marilyn) Figg of South Bend; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Judy Kay Burrows, who died at birth and two brothers.

Funeral services for Maxine V. Burrows will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Niles with the Rev. Fran Lane-Lawrence and Elder Ray Fulbright of the church officiating.

Interment will be at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Mishawaka, Ind.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
