Niles softball splits with Comets

COLOMA – Coming off a sweep of Marshall earlier in the week, the Niles varsity softball team was looking for more up in Coloma on Thursday.

The Vikings ran their winning streak to three games by winning the opener 11-4.

That streak came to an end in the second game as the Comets rebounded to take an 11-1 win in six innings.

The split gives Niles a 3-6 overall record.

Heather Daniels tossed a two-hitter with five strikeouts and just three walks in the opening game.

The Vikings knocked the ball all over the Comets’ field and finished the game with 19 hits.

Brooke Wilson had three hits and three RBIs, while Abby McKeel had a single, two doubles and three RBIs.

Charissa Spear had three hits, including a double and Sarah Cramer added two singles and three RBIs.

Niles also got two hits and an RBI from Hannah Porterfield.

The Comets scored three runs in each of the first two innings and then scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to take the nightcap.

Niles had eight hits in the contest, led by Daniels, who had two singles and a RBI.
Cramer and Porterfield also had two hits.

Spear took the loss for the Vikings as she allowed three earned runs on eight hits.

The Niles junior varsity softball team split a pair of games with visiting Coloma on Thursday.

The Vikings (3-6) won the first game 9-3, but dropped the second contest 4-3.

Michelle Briand was the winning pitcher in the opening game for the Vikings as she tossed a two-hitter.

Brea Haines, Starr Ford and Briand all had two hits in the first game. Haines and Lauren Skalla both doubled.

Briand had a triple.

In the second game, Haines and Amanda Albright both had two hits. Haines and Drew Sabat both had a double.
