DONALDSON, Ind. – The Ancilla College softball team began its season on a sour note after being swept by Indiana Institute of Technology’s junior varsity team by scores of 8-3 and 8-6.

It took six innings for the Charger bats to come alive in their first game of the season. By that time the visiting Warriors had built up an 8-0 lead.

Ancilla’s (0-2) only offensive output was three runs in the sixth. Lindsay Duke began the inning with a walk and pinch runner Kendy Majors scored on a Kayla Bauer double. Bauer was thrown out at third trying to stretch her hit into a triple.

Alisha Davenport followed with a single to left. Flex player and pitcher Allison Chiles, entering the game as a pinch runner, scored after Kelli Price reached base on an error and Justine McBride reached base on a fielder’s choice.

Price scored on a Trina Bauer groundout. Philippa Kindig was 2-2 with a stolen base for Ancilla.

Game two saw Ancilla fall behind early again. In the bottom of the third, down 5-0, McBride walked and Amber Edmundson reached base on an error after her sacrifice bunt. Both scored with two outs on a Demi Schrader double in gap.

Tech stretched the lead to 8-2, before Ancilla sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth to score four runs and narrow the lead to 8-6. McBride again began the inning with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and over to third on an infield single by Kindig.

She scored when the next batter, Schrader, beat out an infield single. Kayla Bauer loaded the bases with a single to left and Kindig scored when a Duke single reloaded the bases.

Schrader would score later, with a two out Trina Bauer walk and Kayla Bauer scored on a Price single to center. The Chargers ended the inning with the bases loaded.

The second game was called in the bottom of the sixth, with Ancilla at the plate, threatening to score again. It was called due to darkness. All scoring reverted back to the end of the fifth inning, leaving the Chargers two runs short.

Duke was 3-3 in game two, including two doubles, while Schrader picked up three RBI.
Ancilla hits the road for three weekend double headers, beginning at Prairie State College (IL) on Thursday, March 11. They travel to play Harper College (IL) today.
