Silas Rex Young, 74, of Bridgewater, Va. died peacefully at his home Aug. 26, 2009 after an 18-month illness.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater, Va., with the Rev. Kelly A. Lane officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Aug. 28, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was born April 5, 1935 in Charlotte, Ark. and was a member of the Bridgewater Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Silas and Sarah Enid, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Dolyn-Guy, James Butler, John Walter and Bobby Lawrence. Rex also raised Bobby from the age of 13 until he was married.

On Nov. 3, 1953, he married Wanda Genelle Pate who survives.

He is also survived by four children, Peggy (David) Jennings, Dennis (Linda) Young, Yvonne (Keith) Strawderman, and Barbara Young Abbrescia; nine grandchildren, Bryan Havener, Jennifer Moore and Elizabeth Jennings, Mike and Tony Young, Sarah and Adam Strawderman, and John and Dominique Abbrescia, and five great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by three sisters and one brother, Emily Jo Holt and Steve Young of Buchanan, Doris Yates of Cherokee Village, Ark. and Carol Maslowski of Kansas City, Mo.

Rex retired in 1992 after working 39 years for Kawneer. He will be loved and missed by all.
