DUHS thinclads second at mini-jamboree

ALLEGAN — The Dowagiac girls track team finished second at the Wolverine Conference mini-jamboree Tuesday.

Vicksburg was the winner with 109 points. The Chieftains finished second with 97 points. Host Allegan was third (67), Otsego fourth (52) and Comstock fifth (22).

Dowagiac’s Creona Rodgers won the 100-meters (13.36), the high jump (4-10) and the long jump (15-6.5).

She was also a member of the winning 400-meter relay team, which also consisted of Jacoya Brookins, Rosadio Murray and Correisha Rodgers. That unit ran a time of 53.89.

Dowagiac also captured the 800-meter relay as the team of Ciera Smith, Brookins, Angel Parker and Correisha Rodgers was clocked at 1:55.15.

Brookins was a triple winner as she also won the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 17.18.

Regina and Hazel Kennedy dominated the throwing events as they placed first and second in both events.

Regina won the shot put with a toss of 31-3.75, while sister Hazel was second with a throw of 27-8.25. They reversed their order of finish in the discus with Hazel winning with a toss of 88-05 and Regina earning the runner-up spot after a heave of 84-5.

The Chieftain boys team took third with 48 points. Vicksburg was with 125 points. Otsego was third with 123, while Allegan finished fourth (34) and Comstock fifth (23).

Chris Gantt was a double winner as he captured the 800- and 1,600-meters with times of 2:02.13 and 4:31.54 respectively.

Dowagiac’s other wins came in the long jump with Dontel Highsmith leaping 20-9.25 and Sam Courtney in the shot put with a toss of 46-7.5.
