Edwardsburg teams keep title hopes alive

EDWARDSBURG — With two games remaining on its Wolverine Conference schedule, Edwardsburg is going to have to sweep league-leading Niles and Vicksburg, and then get some help, if it wants a piece of the boys basketball title.
The Eddies kept their title hopes alive with a 64-40 win over visiting Sturgis Tuesday night.
Edwardsburg (11-6 9-3 Wolverine) hosts conference leader Niles Friday night. The Vikings (15-4, 11-1 Wolverine) will face Plainwell in its final conference contest after Friday night.
Sturgis (2-15, 2-10 Wolverine) kept the game close for one quarter Tuesday night. The Trojans trailed the Eddies 13-11 after the first eight minutes. The Trojans would get no closer as Edwardsburg opened up a 31-17 halftime advantage and led 45-27 heading into the final quarter.
Annon Billingsly led the Eddies with 14 points, while Brody Schimpa 11 and Matt Anders 10 points. Reed Rosenkranz and Will Moore both finished with nine points.
Grady Miller scored 21 points to lead the Trojans.
Girls Basketball
Like the boys basketball team, the Eddies kept their Wolverine Conference hopes alive with a 61-33 victory over host Sturgis Tuesday night.
Edwardsburg (11-6, 8-3 Wolverine) trails league leader Vicksburg by two games with three left to play. After hosting Niles Friday night, the Eddies will travel to Vicksburg to face the Bulldogs on Feb. 22. Edwardsburg wraps up the league portion of its schedule against visiting Plainwell on Feb. 29.
The Bulldogs (14-2, 10-1 Wolverine) will travel to Sturgis Friday night before facing the Eddies and wrapping up its league campaign Feb. 29 by hosting Otsego.
After taking a 16-5 lead after one quarter, Edwardsburg shutout Sturgis in the second quarter to lead 25-5 at halftime. The Eddies advantage grew to 46-21 heading into the final quarter.
Maddie Pobuba had 17 points to lead Edwardsburg, which also got 11 points from Courtney Zarycki and nine points from Val Johnson. Kya Shier and Lainie Dorow both finished with seven points.
Yuridiana Villafuerte and Keyanna O’Tey both had 12 points for the Trojans.
