DOWAGIAC — A trio of Dowagiac seniors earned first-team All-Wolverine Conference in football this season.

Two-way starters Luke Staten and Alex McIntosh were selected to the defense, while Cailyn Murphy was named to the offensive side of the squad. Staten and McIntosh were selected as a defensive lineman and defensive back, respectively.

“Alex was a two-way starter for us at wide receiver and defensive back,” first-year Dowagiac coach Randy Brooks said. “He guarded the other team’s best receiver and was a good tackler in space. He had three interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. He rarely came off the field for the Chieftains.”

Murphy was chosen as a skilled position player.

“Cailyn was a two-time all-conference player,” Brooks said. “He had a great year for us running and throwing the ball. He just verbally committed to Ferris State University to play football.”

Staten also earned second-team honors for his offensive line play.

“Luke was a two-way starter as a lineman and was a good long-snapper, who moved from tight end to offensive tackle, and moved from outside linebacker to defensive line to help the team,” Brooks said. “He was our most valuable player. He is undecided on a college, but wants to play football.”

Earning honorable mention for the Chieftains were Mikey Schlup, Lamberto Paredes and Hunter Williamson.
