Abdullah all-state for third consecutive year

NILES — For the third straight season, Brandywine junior Zakiyyah Abdullah has been named all-state.
Abdullah, who surpassed the 1,000 point plateau this past season, was named first team Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, third team Detroit Free Press and honorable mention by the Associated Press.
She was also first-team BCS Athletic Conference All-Red Division for the third consecutive season.
“She led the team in points for the third straight year and was our floor general,” said Brandywine coach Josh Hood. “She eclipsed 1,000 career points, which is a phenomenal accomplishment as a junior.”
Senior Nicole Sachman was named honorable mention all-state for the second straight year and was is on the all-academic team. She is a three-time BCS All-Red Division selection, who will attend Lakeland University, a Division III school in Wisconsin.
Kennedy Byrd earned first-team All-Red Division for the second straight year, while Megan Schmidt was an honorable mention All-Red Division pick for a second consecutive season.
“Nicole was second in points and led the team in rebounds,” Hood said. “Kennedy is a three-year starter who will have a huge senior year for us. Megan does all the intangible things at an elite level and is the hardest worker in the program on a consistent basis. She is a three-year starter who will also have a huge senior season.”
As a team, Brandywine had an GPA of 3.574, which earned it academic all-state.
Abdullah and Sachman join the list of eight other Bobcats to earn all-state in the past 10 years.
