LETTER: Mid-term election is chance to replace Upton

Fred Upton likes to portray himself as a champion of bipartisanship, but the reality is that he has voted in line with Donald Trump’s policy positions 97 percent of the time.

These votes include his notorious flip-flop on the devastating Republican health care plan that would have deprived millions of Americans of affordable health insurance. Upton initially said he opposed this legislation, but after a meeting with Trump he immediately changed his mind.

Upton voted to pass a tax cut bill that greatly enriches the wealthiest individuals and greatly increases the federal deficit and debt. He voted to repeal important consumer financial protections, to deprive states of the right to enforce their own concealed-carry firearms regulations, to endanger the public’s health by delaying implementation of ozone standards, to dismantle protections put in place to prevent another financial crisis, to repeal an FCC rule barring internet companies from sharing data on customers’ activities, to repeal a Department of Education rule on school accountability, to repeal a rule requiring energy companies to reduce waste and emissions, to repeal a rule requiring the Social Security Administration to submit information about potentially dangerous individuals to the national background check system, to repeal a rule requiring federal contractors to report labor violations, to repeal the stream protection rule, and to repeal a rule requiring energy companies to disclose payments to foreign governments.

Upton has failed to speak out against Trump’s constant stream of lies, his racist remarks and behavior, or his dangerous war-mongering. Upton has failed to condemn Trump’s nomination of extremely unqualified individuals to lifetime judicial appointments. Upton has failed to speak out against Trump’s corrupt practices, like enriching himself by charging taxpayers exorbitant prices for his frequent trips to his privately-owned properties. Upton has failed to condemn the corrupt practices of many Trump cabinet appointees, who have spent large amounts of taxpayer funds on extravagant private purchases while undermining essential protections for workers and the environment.

In November, we the people need to elect a representative who is willing to stand up for our interests, not the interests of Donald Trump.
