Oh Captain! My Captain!

Our little community of Edwardsburg has lost another pillar, and the foundations are shifting yet again. We did not lose a doctor, who cured generations of patients,  nor a lawyer, who created landmark legislation. Nor did we lose a sports star, who won championships.

We mourn the passing of the beloved “Captain” Ron Linton, longtime proprietor of The Dock, a longtime fixture on the east side of Eagle Lake.

It was founded in the heady days of the 1970s, when the state’s drinking age was 18. One of the survivors of that group when the age was raised back up. Places like Culvers and Cobert Lake faded into history, but The Dock soldiered on.

Chances are, if you grew up in the ‘70s, ‘80s, or ‘90s in our area, you remember his place. Fondly.

The driving force behind this establishment was Captain Ron. He was always smiling and always had a twinkle in his eyes. He was larger than life. Enough to make you forget your troubles, at least for a while.

But he did not just help his customers. He employed many local people. For some, a first job, for others,  a little extra income.

That kind of person comes along rarely, someone who can bring laughter anytime. We need men like him more than ever these days.

He also used to play Santa Claus. He needed only to don the uniform, for his heart (and his beard) were true. Nay, he did not “play” Santa, he became Santa.

Someone who gave so much, for so many, for so long is rare, indeed. The world is a slightly darker place because of his passing.

Fair winds and following seas, Captain Ron, may the Great Harbormaster give you the rewards you so richly deserve.
