Berrien County Health Department officials want to remind everyone in Berrien County to get their annual Influenza “flu” vaccination.

It is recommended that every person six months and older get the flu vaccination every year, especially certain groups who are considered at highest risk, like young children, pregnant women, and adults over the age of 65.

Residents are reminded that they can receive flu vaccinations at a variety of locations throughout the community, including at the Berrien County Health Department, Lakeland Health, pharmacies and at their family doctor’s office. With flu season right around the corner, Dr. Rick Johansen, the Berrien County Medical Director stressed the importance of vaccination.

“Getting vaccinated soon has advantages since it takes about two weeks for antibodies to develop and provide protection that will last throughout the flu season,” Johansen said.

The flu vaccine is still the single best protection against the flu and it is also helpful in reducing the length and severity of illness if someone does get the flu.

The Berrien County Health Department will offer flu vaccinations at their offices in Benton Harbor and Niles every Friday Oct.  6 through Dec. 15. The clinic is closed until noon Oct. 13 and all day on Nov. 10.

Both locations will accept walk-ins between the hours of 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Residents may also make an appointment to receive their flu vaccination.

High-dose flu vaccinations and pneumonia vaccinations are also offered for those over age 65. Most insurance plans will cover the cost for these vaccines, but no one will be turned away for an inability to pay.

Flu symptoms include fever and chills; cough, sore throat and runny or stuffy nose; muscles aches and joint pains; headaches and fatigue; nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

To minimize the risk of getting the flu, everyone should:

• Get a flu vaccine every year.

• Wash hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes, and dispose of used tissues

• Stay home from work, school and/or public gatherings if sick with flu

• Contact a doctor as soon as flu symptoms start to ensure early treatment that can help prevent complications; this is especially important for vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant women and adults over the age of 65
