October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Michigan, and First Lady Sue Snyder is continuing efforts to raise awareness, emphasize the importance of early detection and encourage women to receive yearly screenings for breast cancer.

“Breast cancer awareness is an issue very near and dear to my heart,” Snyder said. “As a 14-year breast cancer survivor, I know firsthand how this disease can affect an individual, their friends and family.

“Early detection is critical for survival, and I encourage women to receive regular screenings and become even more educated about this disease. I know that by working together, Michigan will continue to be a leader in breast cancer prevention and treatment.”

On Wednesday, Snyder joined state Rep. Kathy Crawford to present a House Resolution in observance of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Michigan. Gov. Rick Snyder has also proclaimed October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In Michigan, it is estimated there will be 8,160 new cases of breast cancer and that 1,410 women will die from the disease in 2017. To encourage early diagnosis and reduce health disparities, all women should talk to their physician about their individual risk factors.

Women can limit their risk by incorporating healthy behaviors in their lives and getting regular breast cancer screenings. Healthy behaviors that will help lower a woman’s risk include increasing physical activity, quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting alcohol use.

Women should talk with their health care provider about healthy lifestyles and breast cancer prevention and screening. In addition, residents may call 1-844-I-GOT-SCR (446-8727) for more information.
