The effort to bring another round of Independence Day fireworks to Dowagiac this summer has started off with a bang.

Dowagiac’s Accounting Consultants recently donated $500 to the Young Professionals of Greater Dowagiac in support of the organization’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show at Russom Park, which is scheduled to take place at dusk on June 30. The local accounting firm is among the first donors to support the upcoming event, said Becky Grabemeyer, treasurer with the Young Professionals.

This is the second year that Accounting Consultants, located at 58151 Park Place, has contributed to the annual show. The company’s contribution places it in the highest donor tier, “Grand Finale Sponsor,” a title given to businesses or individuals who donate $500 or more.

Other donation tiers for this year’s event include:

  • “Rocket Sponsor,” $250
  • “Firecracker Sponsor,” $100
  • “Sparkler Sponsor,” $50
  • “Red, White and Blue Sponsor,” $25

Members of the Young Professionals have organized the Fourth of July show since 2014, when the service club resurrected the event following a near 10-year hiatus.

“It’s a great community event,” said Amy Marks, a staff accountant with Accounting Consultants and a member of the Young Professionals. “It’s something the entire family can enjoy.”

Late last month, organizers kicked off fundraising for the 2017 event. They are looking to raise around $6,000 from the community, taking donations up to and even during the show on June 30, Grabemeyer said.

“We always have a lot of repeat donors, so we know this is an event that people love and are willing to get behind,” she said.

Licensed pyrotechnician and Young Professionals member Kirk Proshwitz will once again handle the fireworks for the show next month. Other members of the organization will volunteer during the evening as well, helping with parking and collecting donations from visitors.

“It’s one of the most anticipated family events in the community,” said Mandy Wallace, another accountant with Accounting Consultants. “It’s something that people look forward to throughout the entire year.”

The accounting firm, which celebrates 25 years in business this year, focuses on providing payroll, bill payment and other financial services to businesses, in particular professional service providers such as dentists and doctors. The company has around 360 clients at the moment.

People interested in donating to the Fourth of July fireworks may do so by mailing checks to P.O. Box 586, Dowagiac, MI 49047, or may drop them off at Bakeman Barbers, located at 101 S. Front St. in Dowagiac. For membership or other information about the club, people may visit facebook.com/YPDowagiac/ or can reach the club by telephone at 783-2505.

The Young Professionals has recently been approved as 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
