Teenager injured after moped crashes while crossing over railroad tracks

PENN TOWNSHIP — A Three Rivers teenager was hospitalized after he fell from his moped while crossing train tracks in Penn Township Saturday, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies with the department were dispatched around 6:30 p.m. that evening to a reported accident on Dutch Settlement Street near Goff Lake Road. The accident occurred while 17-year-old Edwin Stevens was driving east on Dutch Settlement Street when he lost control over his moped while crossing over railroad tracks.

A personal vehicle transported Stevens to Three Rivers Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Authorities do not know if Stevens was wearing a helmet at the time. Police do not believe alcohol played a role in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Dowagiac woman injured after falling asleep at wheel

HOWARD TOWNSHIP — A Dowagiac woman was injured Sunday after her vehicle crashed while she was asleep at the wheel in Howard Township, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies with the department were dispatched around 12:40 p.m. to an accident that occurred on Barron Lake Road outside Niles.

Authorities say 29-year-old Tiffany Hisler was driving south on Barron Lake Road when she fell asleep. Her vehicle ran off the roadway and struck several nearby mailboxes and a utility pole.

An ambulance transported Hisler to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment of the injuries she sustained in the crash.

The woman was wearing a seatbelt at the time. Authorities do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Deputies are continuing to investigate the crash.

Crews with the Howard Township Fire Department, SMCAS Ambulance and AEP assisted deputies at the scene.
