What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library is building a community of lifelong learners who want to make Niles their lifelong home. Patrons do not need a library card to participate in any programs and all programs are free. Tuesday, April 4
• 10:30 a.m. — Passport Pals
Join the library each Tuesday for a storytime tour of the world. Each week, the library will have books, songs, a craft and other surprises relating to the country of the month.
• Noon to 1 p.m. and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Tasty Tuesday Teens: Edible jewelry
Participants may relive the splendor of elementary school by coming to the library and making an edible bracelet made of candy and cereal. The group will meet in the booths in the teen area.
• 6 to 6:30 p.m. — Chips and Chapters
Chips and Chapters is a read-aloud storytime. Every Tuesday, Ms. Tara will read aloud from a chapter book while participants eat chips and follow along.
• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — LEGO building challenge
The library has the LEGOs, participants have the creativity. Stop by youth services on the first and third Tuesday of each month to create a masterpiece.
• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — NACO ensemble performance
Audible Arts will present an ensemble performance from the Niles Area Community Orchestra in the rotunda at the library.
Wednesday, April 5
• Multiple times — Storytime day
Squealers (birth to 18 months) at 9:30 a.m., Squigglers (18 months to 3 years) at 10 and 11 a.m., Storytime (3 to 5 years) at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
• 4 to 7 p.m. — Coupon exchange
Coupon enthusiasts may join Ann in the youth services area for a weekly coupon exchange. This program is open to teens and adults.
Thursday, April 6
• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — The Connection (Emergency Shelter Services)
This program of Emergency Shelter Services is a one-stop shop for help when housing is threatened, and also for referrals and information. Representatives will be at the library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Thursday. For questions or information, contact Stephanie at (269) 277-5055.
• 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime
• 11 a.m. — “The Magic of Reading” with Mr. Jim
Mr. Jim will be at the library to show visitors the magic of reading. Participants may join the library for a free magic show in the rotunda
• 1 to 4:30 p.m. — Mahjong
Volunteers are available to teach newbies how to play. Other board games are also available.
• 4:30 to 7 p.m. — Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
People who made less than $54,000 in 2016 and need assistance in preparing a basic tax return may schedule a VITA appointment by calling United Way at 211 or (800) 310-5454. Volunteers will be at Niles District Library every Thursday evening during tax season.
• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time
Teens are invited to hang out from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays for a weekly night of fun dedicated to them. The library has games, snacks, books and a place to study in the teen department.
Friday, April 7
• 8:30 to 10 a.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Microsoft
Publisher class
People who would like to create flyers, brochures and newsletters may join the library in the computer lab for an overview on using Microsoft Publisher. To register, call (269) 683-8545 ext. 113, email CommunityEngagement@nileslibrary.net, or stop by the information desk at the library. For the morning class, guests are asked to enter via the side door near the handicap parking spots. For the evening class, participants are asked to arrive before the library closes.
• 10:30 a.m. — Family Feature Friday – “Sing”
Family Feature Friday will be showing the newly released animated feature “Sing.”
• 11 a.m. to noon — Special Edition: Birds
Special Edition is a weekly series of programs designed to be accessible and engaging for adults and children with special needs.
• 2 to 4:30 p.m. — Teen Features: “National Treasure”
The library’s teen feature for this week will be the Nicholas Cage thriller “National Treasure.” Join the library for popcorn and a free film. The group will meet in the Storytime Room.
• 3 to 5 p.m. — Twisted Stitches
Particpants may enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and chat while they work on their own yarn or sewing project. Rookies are welcome. There will be a teacher and a few loaner tools to help rookies get started.
Saturday, April 8
• 10:30 a.m. — Toddler dance party
This musical program is aimed for toddlers ages 0 to 5, to help strengthen the brain and body muscles. The program will use music to reinforce hand-eye coordination, cross brain exercises and tactile and sensory movements.
• 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Yoga at the library
Participants may take the time to do something great for themselves while reaping the health and relaxation benefits of yoga. This free class is for all abilities. If participants do not have a yoga mat, a limited number of mats will be available to borrow.
• Noon to 1 p.m. — Cosplay on a budget
Cosplayers may join Tara Carnage, an experienced cosplayer from South Bend, Indiana, for a look at how high-quality costumes may be assembled with a little creativity and without spending a lot of money. This program is open to teens and adults.
• 1 p.m. — Jr. Garden Club
For children ages 6 to 12, Jr. Garden Club meets the second Saturday of every month at 1 p.m. Initial registration is required by calling (269) 683-8545 ext. 106. This month, the club will learn about garden markers and how to make them.
• 1 to 2 p.m. — Teen writers’ workshop
The library will have a writing professional available to help aspiring writers begin, continue or polish their work. This workshop will also be able to help teens who intend to enter the annual writing contest at the library.
• 1 to 5 p.m. — Game day for adults
Gamers who are 18 or older may join the library for a game day on the second Saturday of each month. The library will have board games, cards, tabletop games, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U games set up and ready for gaming. Gamers may bring their own games and equipment.
• 3 to 4 p.m. — Teen Service Saturday: Newborn hats
This Saturday will be the first in a series of programs that teens will make something to donate to a local organization. This month, the group will be making newborn hats on the knitting loom to donate to the Pregnancy Care Center.
• 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen and adult Nerf night
Teens (13 and older) and adults are invited to come to the library for an after-hours round of Nerf games with an emphasis on strategy and teamwork. Arrive before the library closes at 6 p.m.
